10 Tips to Help You Set Tile Like a Pro

1. Keep your tile and other supplies at room temperature for at least 24 hours before install.

2. Always do a dry run. Lay out your tiles without adhesive first to make sure you’re going to get the pattern and spacing you want.

3. Mix only enough adhesive that you can use the entire batch within 20-30 minutes. This will prevent your mix from drying out and becoming unworkable.

4. When setting tiles, give each piece a small twist as you place it into the adhesive. This will ensure proper adhesion and a level surface.

5. When tiling around a tub, leave a 1⁄4” expansion joint between the tub and tile. You can fill this space with flexible caulk once the project is finished.

6. When scoring tile, score each cut only once. This will prevent irregular breakage along the cut line. It will also prolong the life of your cutting tool.

7. When working with cap and edge tiles, trowel adhesive onto the tile rather than the surface to be tiled. This will help you avoid getting adhesive above the desired height.

8. Wait at least 24 hours for the tile to set up before applying grout.

9. Use sanded grout for joints wider than 1/16”. The sand adds strength to prevent cracking. Non-sanded grout is more workable and best used for smaller joints.

10. For bath and shower tile, apply a grout sealer to protect the grout and prevent mold. Sealer should not be applied until the tile is fully cured—about 2 weeks or more.
